Madonna dell'Orto is a Roman Catholic parish church in Venice in the Cannaregio sestiere . The Gothic church houses important works by Tintoretto and Cima da Conegliano .

history

In 1350 the order of the Humiliates built a church, which was dedicated to St. Christopher , and founded a monastery. In 1377 a Gothic church was built with donations; The occasion was the transfer of a miraculous statue of the Madonna that had been found in a nearby garden ( orto ). The church itself was completed around 1400, but the facade could only be completed between 1460 and 1464.

The monastery came to the Canon Regulars of San Giorgio in Alga after the Humiliates had been driven out . It was named after its dissolution in 1669 of the original in the monastery of San Tommaso dei Borgognoni (Torcello) domiciled Cistercian monks acquired, which remained there until the end of the Republic (1797).

Construction and plant

The main front is based on the monumental buildings of the Frari Church and Santi Giovanni e Paolo (Zanipolo), which it receives in more modest dimensions. The three-part facade corresponds to the division of the interior and is also a brick building. The rich tracery windows facing the campo date to around 1440. Bartolomeo Bon's portal , like that of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, is a major work of late Gothic sculpture. The basket arch is crowned by a statue of St. Christopher, the patron saint of merchants. The two flanking columns, each bearing a Maria, were not added until 1481. The facade also has rich figural decorations (figures of the virtues and the 12 apostles).

The Scuola dei Mercanti is located to the left of the church front .

The floor plan has six bays ; the three-aisled church has a flat roof. A transept is missing. Chapels were added to the left aisle in the first four bays, the northernmost of which is the Contarini family chapel .

The bell tower standing free next to the basilica was built in 1332, the bell storey added in 1503. In the opinion of some researchers, the tip of the campanile was the model for the “ Welschen hoods ” of the Frauenkirche in Munich . The bell dome, which collapsed after a storm, was rebuilt in 1818 at the instigation of the Austrian preservation authorities. The interior was restored in the years 1837–1848, 1869, 1892–1893, 1930–1937. Madonna dell'Orto is arguably the most restored church in Venice.
