Contarini

The Contarini were a Venetian patrician family (see: patriciate of Venice ).

They were among the twelve noblest families of the Republic of Venice and produced a large number of famous men, including four patriarchs and eight doges , 44 procurators and many generals, statesmen, artists, poets and scholars. The family owed their wealth to extensive trade with the coast of Africa .

Noble family

The Contarini were among the dozen of the "apostolic" families who claimed to have been there from the start. The clan was first mentioned in 960. Not only in age but also in size he was one of the great families of Venice. In 1261 the Contarini made 20 of 430 members of the Grand Council.

Doge
  • Domenico was the first doge of the Contarini family; he held this dignity from 1043 to 1071. Several public buildings in Venice go back to him. He gave the St. Mark's Church its present form, and he also built the monasteries of San Nicolò di Gigli and Sant'Angelo di Concordia on the Lido .
  • Jacopo Contarini , Doge from 1275 to 1280, suppressed an uprising in the cities of Trieste and Capodistria , successfully continued a war against Ancona until the city was forced to submit to the sovereignty of Venice on the sea, put down a rebellion with which the Cortazzi had sought toseparate Crete from Venice, and acquired several cities in Dalmatia , Istria and Romagna .
  • Andrea , Doge from 1368 to 1382, after hehad condemned Marino Faliero as judge, the uprising of the Trieste and the inhabitants of Candia (now Heraklion ) and concluded a peace with Austria . From a feud with Franz von Carrara , Lord of Padua , a war with Genoa had arisen, usually called the War of Chioggia , which, with few interruptions, had lasted for about 100 years and had taken a turn that was most unfavorable for Venice than Contarini himself took over the command and in 1380 Chioggia to surrender and Genoa in 1381 to make peace. He was the first doge to be given a funeral speech by the state. The Republic also had his return from that warpaintedby Paolo Veronese at public expense.

  • Nicolò , Doge from 1630 to 1631, wrote several writings, including a. De rerum perfectione libri VI (Venice 1576) and Modo della elezione del serenissimo principe di Venezia (Rome 1630).
  • Carlo was Doge from 1655 to 1656. Under his rule, the Venetian admiral Lazzaro Mocenigo defeated the Turkish fleet under the cannons of the Dardanelles .
  • Domenico II was Doge from 1659 to 1674. The devastating war against the Turks for Candia from 1663 to 1666 fell under his rule.
  • Alvise Contarini was Doge of Venice from 1676–1684
