Palazzo Contarini dal Zaffo
Palazzo Contarini Dal Zaffo is a Venetian palace in the Cannaregio sestiere on the Rio Madonna dell'Orto near the Madonna dell'Orto church . On its eastern side, like the Casino degli Spiriti that borders its garden, it borders on the Sacca della Misericordia .
history
The 16th century building was commissioned by the Contarini Dal Zaffo family , as was the Palazzo Contarini Dal Zaffo of the same name, also known as Palazzo Contarini Polignac , in the Dorsoduro sestiere from the 15th century. Today the palace is used by the church and charities and houses a home for the elderly in the right wing.
Giorgio Contarini was the first Duke of Jaffa (Zaffo). The palace is probably the birthplace of the diplomat and theologian Gasparo Contarini .
architecture
The wide facade of the typical Renaissance palace on the Fondamenta di Gasparo Contarini shows no symmetry. The three-story palace is the size of a mezzanine with square windows on the ground floor . In the middle there are two entrance portals with large semi-arches over two floors. In between there is a stone family coat of arms of the Contarini. The first and second floors each have a row of 13 rectangular framed windows, on the second floor with semi-arches. In the piano nobile on the left there is a serliana , not above the beautiful double portal.
Behind the palace is a spacious garden facing the north end of the city and the lagoon. Inside, like the palace on the Grand Canal, there are frescoes by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo . In the mezzanine there is Giorgio Contarini's apotheosis .
