Life

As such he was u. a. responsible for construction activities of the republic and asset management of San Marco . He was a well-known patron of music and gathered a large collection of music manuscripts in his villa in Piazzola, which Girolamo Contarini donated to the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice in 1843 (906 manuscripts and 4,000 books) . It is an important source on 17th century music, especially opera scores such as those by Claudio Monteverdi (e.g. Coronation of Poppea ) and Francesco Cavalli . Contarini also made musical instruments in the Contarini-Correr collection in the Museo Correr in Venice (purchased by Pietro Correr in 1872). Other parts of the musical instruments collection are now in the museums of the conservatories in Paris and Brussels and in the Museo Civico in Venice.
