Palazzo Contarini Fasan , also Casa di Desdemona , is a palace in Venice in the Italian region of Veneto . It is located in the Sestiere San Marco , overlooking the Grand Canal, between the Palazzo Manolesso Ferro and the Palazzo Venier Contarini .
history
The Palazzo Contarini Fasan is a characteristic building for the 15th century that belonged to the Contarini family. Over the centuries a legend has developed that the building is the house of Desdemona , a character from the drama Othello by William Shakespeare .
description
The small palace has a facade that extends upwards. The window arrangement, a strong expression of the Venetian Gothic , can be seen on the three levels: on the ground floor it consists of three small, rectangular windows (there is no access to the water), on the first floor there is a triple ogive window with a balcony, the openings of which are made of white columns Stone are separated, on the second floor there are two single arched windows . Between the two individual windows, under a small, square opening, sits a large coat of arms of the Contarinis as a half-relief.
The facade is closed off by a serrated cornice , under which traces of frescoes from the 15th century that once adorned the facade are preserved. On the left-hand side, an "overpass" connects the palace with the adjacent building. What is remarkable is the Gothic window, which is similar to those in the facade.
