Palazzo Contarini a San Beneto

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Palazzo Contarini a San Beneto is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the San Marco sestiere with a view of the Rio di San Luca , just before it flows into the Grand Canal . Its main facade adjoins the side facade of the Palazzo Corner Contarini di Cavalli and is opposite the Palazzo Grimani .

history

The palace was certainly built on the site of a Gothic building and was completed in 1566; its builder is not known. It is believed that its builder named Sante Lombardo and died in the year this palace was completed. The building was restored in two phases: in the 17th century an inner courtyard and a monumental staircase were built and in the 18th century the frescoes and stucco work were created , some of which have now disappeared.

The Corner , Contarini , Mocenigo and Giovanelli families lived in this palace for centuries . In particular, the Mocenigos acquired ownership of the palace by inheritance in 1833. The building later became the headquarters of the Compagnia delle Acque .

description

The architectural style of this palace suggests that the style of Pietro Lombardo gave way to the preferences introduced with the work of Sebastiano Serlio . In view of the many decorations, John Ruskin identified this building as an example of the architectural styles that highlight the transition from the simple forms to the more complex ones of the Renaissance .

The facade looks really posh due to the prevalence of 16th century taste, showing a series of Venetian windows in the center and decorative friezes on the level of the main floor. These stylistic elements are later joined by older ones, such as the decoration of the facade, which served as a status symbol , and the shape of the arches that form the multiple windows on the second main floor. The whole facade is also characterized by different marble qualities , cartouches, patereas and lozenges. The care for the lower part of the facade, where the openings are neatly distributed over two levels and create a special architectural rhythm, is even unique.

The building has a unique L-shaped floor plan, which is due to the fit between the existing buildings, which means that the rooms face two inner courtyards. As for the interiors, the “casino” on the top floor is decorated with stucco work by Carpoforo Mazzetti Toncalla . The frescoes commemorate the wedding of Giulio Contarini and Elena Morosini , which was celebrated in 1748: they are works by Francesco Fontebasso and Gaspare Diziani .
