Life

Gaspare Diziani began studying painting with Antonio Lazzarini in Belluno. He later moved to Venice, where he first joined Gregorio Lazzarini's workshop . He then went on to do an apprenticeship with Sebastiano Ricci , who influenced him significantly and is now regarded as his most important successor Diziani.

From 1712 Diziani traveled through Europe as a traveling artist. At first he stayed in England. From August III. Called to Saxony around 1717 , he spent several years at the latter's court. He designed stage sets and painted some altarpieces for the castle church in Dresden. In 1718 he made four over- portals for the Munich Residenz .

Apart from a stay in Rome (1726/27), where he designed a wall painting in the San Lorenzo in Damaso on behalf of Cardinal Ottoboni , Diziani lived exclusively in Venice again from 1720. That year he was accepted into the Venetian painters' guild and completed a cycle of eight paintings on which he had worked for ten years. This includes a portrait of Maria Magdalena, which is in the Church of San Stefano in Belluno. He also painted three frescoes about the life of St. Helena in the Scuola del Vin near San Silvestro in Venice.

After the death of Sebastiano Ricci in 1734, he gave up stage painting and devoted himself entirely to decorative painting, choosing mainly historical, religious and landscape motifs. Diziani was known for a quick and accurate painting technique with powerful brushstrokes. His early work in particular is characterized by exuberant colors and gestures, which can be traced back to Ricci's influence. He later developed his own style, which is a little gentler and more delicate, which is particularly reflected in his works from the second half of the 1740s.

In his time, Diziani was a very popular and busy painter who carried out numerous works for churches and monasteries in and around Venice, with his two sons Antonio (1737-1797) and Giuseppe (1732-1803) actively supporting him. Jacopo Marieschi (1711–1794) and Pietro Edwards (1744–1821) were among his students .

During the 19th century Diziani was largely forgotten, his works were hardly mentioned or attributed to Ricci. Only later was his important contribution to the artistic era of the late baroque recognized again. Today his work can be found in important museums such as the Hermitage , the Louvre in Paris and the Albertina in Vienna .
