Jacopo Contarini was after Domenico I. Contarini the second of eight Doges from the extensive Contarini family . In addition to the doges, there were a great number of procurators , cardinals , patriarchs , scholars and admirals named Contarini.

The Doge's Office

Jacopo Contarini was elected Doge on September 6, 1275. He was already more than 80 years old and ailing, so he was obviously an embarrassment candidate. In his political career he had been ambassador to Constantinople and the Vatican , and he was the procurator of San Marco . Contarini was married and had four sons.

During his short reign there were quarrels with Rome over supremacy over Ancona , which the newly elected Pope Nicholas III. for himself, and who had received confirmation of his claims to the brands and Ancona from the German emperor in 1278 . With the threat of excommunication from Venice, the Pope tried to enforce his claims. Perhaps because he no longer felt himself to be able to cope with a dispute with the Pope, Contarini abdicated on March 6, 1280.

He died at the end of the year and was buried in the cloister of the Frari Church . His tomb has not been preserved; it was destroyed at the end of the 18th century.
