Nicolò Marcello (around 1399 - December 1, 1474 ) was the 69th Doge of Venice from 1473 to 1474 . During his reign, the clashes with the Ottomans over Cyprus , Scutari and Friuli continued .

Life

Marcello had been involved in oriental trade before taking on various important positions in the service of the republic, including in Brescia , Verona and Udine . He was head of the Council of Ten , consigliere and 1466 procurator ( procuratore di supra ) .
Marcello was married to Bianca Barbarigo , sister of the Doges Marco and Agostino Barbarigo, his second marriage to Contarina Contarini , with whom he had a daughter.

The Doge's Office

In the election, he had prevailed against the later Doges Pietro Mocenigo and Andrea Vendramin . In his short reign he mainly devoted himself to the reorganization of state finances. A Venetian silver coin minted during this period was named after him, Marcello . In his will, he left a large part of his fortune for charity.

Tomb

His tomb was initially in the church of Santa Marina and was built in San Zanipolo after its destruction in 1818 . It is a work by Pietro Lombardo .
