Niccolò Tron
Niccolò Tron , also Niccolò Troncone or Niccolò Trono (* around 1399 in Venice ; † July 28, 1473 there ) was the 68th Doge of Venice from 1471 to 1473 .
family
The Tron family has been registered since 1158 and belonged to the case nuove . Nicolò Tron was the son of a Luca and had at least three brothers. He was married to Deia Morosini , with whom he had at least two sons, Filippo and Giovanni. Giovanni was quartered in 1471 in Turkish captivity .
Life
As a merchant, Tron had become very wealthy in a very short time. He has held several offices in the service of Venice. So he was consigliere in naval matters and ambassador to Pope Pius II. In 1466 he was promoted to procurator of San Marco.
The Doge's Office
Tron had prevailed in the election of 1471 against his later successors Pietro Mocenigo and Andrea Vendramin . During his dogat, the rule of Venice over Cyprus was strengthened and the quarrel with the Turks was restricted by an alliance with the Iranian ruler Ussan Hassan Beg . Through his skilful policy, he ensured the republic a time of peace. However, due to the expansion of the arsenal , among other things, the city 's debt rose sharply.
Tron reformed the Venetian coin system. He created a new coin, the tron , which showed the doge's head in profile on the reverse in the manner of ancient coins, and which thus violated Venetian customs, in which every kind of personality cult in connection with the republic was rejected. After his death, the coin was withdrawn from circulation.
Tomb
The tomb for Tron was built by his son Filippo in the choir of the Frari Church . Design and construction management is assigned to the then master builder at the Doge's Palace, Antonio Rizzo . According to the inscription, the monument was financed with Tron's booty from the Turkish wars .
