Ester Pastorello

Ester Pastorello (born December 8, 1884 in Montagnana , † July 15, 1971 in Padua ) was an Italian archivist and librarian who headed a number of academic libraries.

life and work

Pastorello took her Laurea in July 1907 at the University of Padua . Your qualification work dealt with the Paduan history. Afterwards she entered the archivist service as sottobibliotecaria reggente at the Biblioteca nazionale Marciana in Venice on January 1, 1909 . During the First World War , she was mainly concerned with protecting book collections. After the death of Giulio Coggiola , she was director of the library from September 1919 to November 1920.

In December 1920 she was transferred to the Padua University Library , then in November 1922 to the Biblioteca nazionale Braidense in Milan . With the archive reform of 1923, she was classified as a librarian, and from June 1925 as bibliotecario capo . She was to become director of the Biblioteca governativa of Gorizia . In 1927 she was elected to the directorate of the Pavia University Library , and from July 1933 of the Biblioteca Estense e universitaria of Modena . At the same time she became Soprintendente bibliografico for Emilia . In 1934 she became director of the Biblioteca nazionale di Palermo and Soprintendente , this time for the western part of Sicily. In 1935 it finally became a direttore di 1ª classe . In a similar way, she directed the Biblioteca nazionale di Torino with the Soprintendenza for Piedmont from 1937. At her request, she retired on June 1, 1947 and lived in Padua.

Pastorello had been a member of the Associazione italiana biblioteche since it was founded in 1930 ; from 1946 onwards she established the Turin section, which she presided over as provisional president until her retirement. In addition, in 1916 she was the first woman ever to be socio corrispondente of the Deputazione di storia patria per le Venezie . From 1936 she was deputata and from 1951 socia effettiva . She was also a member of the Accademia patavina di scienze lettere ed arti , where she became socio corrispondente in 1970 .

Ester Pastorello published a work on libraries in 1920, then in 1924 a work on printing in Venice in the 16th century, especially on Aldus Manutius .

She has published in a number of specialist journals and collaborated with the Rivista delle biblioteche e degli archivi , La bibliofilia and the Accademie e biblioteche d'Italia .

Her legacy went to the Marciana in Venice; her library was donated to the Centro studi sui castelli di Montagnana in her native city.
