The Biblioteca Estense Universitaria is a public library in Modena and is housed in the Palazzo dei Musei .

history

The library has its historical origins in the library collection of the Este , that family that the Duchy of Ferrara and that of Modena and Reggio ruled. When the Este family had to return Ferrara to the Papal States, they managed to transfer the library along with other family assets, such as the picture gallery, to Modena , which became the capital of the duchy in 1598 . The library has grown since then.

Some important directors of the Biblioteca Estense:

The careful selection of documents from the various religious orders was primarily due to Tiraboschi. In particular, the libraries of the Jesuits , Benedictines , Theatines and Franciscans were merged.

After the Napoleonic period, the Dukes of Austria-Este expanded the library and after the unification of Italy it was taken over into the university library. In 1995, from an organizational point of view, the two institutes were merged into the Biblioteca Estense Universitaria , a department of the Ministry of Cultural Property and Tourism .

It fulfills the function of legal deposit for the works published in the Province of Modena.

It was decided to move to the former Sant'Agostino hospital, which was restored by the Fondazione Cassa Risparmio di Modena.

Stocks

The library's rich holdings include a Byzantine gospel book from the 10th century, the Cantino-Planisphere (the oldest surviving Portuguese map), a Catalan globe from the 15th century, the Borso d'Este Bible (1455–1461) and some magnificent volumes from the library of the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus (1443–1490), the Bibliotheca Corviniana .
