Francesco Antonio Zaccaria (born March 27, 1714 in Venice , † October 10, 1795 in Rome ) was an Italian Jesuit, theologian, church historian, literary historian and Romanist .

life and work

Zaccaria entered the Jesuit order in 1731, taught in Gorizia , was ordained a priest in Rome in 1740 and officiated in Ancona, Fermo and Pistoia. In 1751 he succeeded Ludovico Antonio Muratori as head of the Este library in Modena . In 1768 he went to the Jesuit library in Rome. From Pius VI. he was appointed professor of church history at La Sapienza University and at the Accademia dei Nobili Ecclesiastici ( Pontifical Diplomatic Academy ). He belonged to several Italian academies. In addition to theological, ecclesiastical, archaeological and polemical writings, he published literary-historical works, in particular an edition of Dante's Divina Comedia (Verona 1749). He was co-editor of the influential magazine Storia Letteraria d'Italia (1. 1750 - 14. 1759)
