history

The Bible of Borso d'Este is one of the most mature forms of Renaissance miniature and was designed by a team of artists led by Taddeo Crivelli and Franco dei Russi long six years parchment painted. After the end of the rule, it was brought from Ferrara to Modena in 1598 , where it remained until the end of the duchy in 1859. On this occasion she was taken into exile by Francis V , along with the most valuable treasures of the family . Brought from Italy, it was recovered during the First World War when it was auctioned in Paris for £ 5,000,000 by Senator Giovanni Treccani , who donated it to the Modena library in 1923.

description

Each page of the Bible is decorated with an elegant frame of spirals and other ornaments, with the text arranged in two columns. There are figurative scenes in the frame, especially in the lower part, where one can often see perspective representations that focus on the achievements of contemporary painting. There are also scenes between the columns of text, even next to the illustrated capital letters. In the spirals at the corners there are often lifelike animals that remind of the polite taste and are often associated with heraldic references to Borso and his family.

In 1925 the Brescian entrepreneur Giovanni Treccani bought the Bible des Borso d'Este in Paris , which was to be sold to an American collector, for an enormous sum of 5 million lire and donated it to the Kingdom of Italy. On the initiative of the same patron Giovanni Treccani, in 1937 Bestetti Edizioni d'Arte in Milan, in collaboration with the publisher Emilio Bestetti, made some valuable numbered reproductions of this work in limited edition, which have developed into one of the most valuable works of Italian printmaking.

1961–1963 a facsimile edition of the Borso d'Este Bible was published by G. Treccani in collaboration with the Banca Popolare di Bergamo and Poligrafiche Bolis.

In 1996 the publisher Franco Cosimo Panini, who specializes in luxury editions, in collaboration with the Istituto dell'Enciclopedia Italiana , reproduced only 750 numbered facsimile copies.
