The Istituto dell'Enciclopedia Italiana is an Italian publisher founded in 1925 and based in Rome . It became known through the universal encyclopedia Enciclopedia Italiana di scienze, lettere ed arti , also called Enciclopedia Treccani . The legal form is a stock corporation , the annual turnover in 2014 was 50.7 million euros.

The Istituto was founded on February 18, 1925 in Rome by Giovanni Treccani as the founding president with Calogero Tumminelli as the publishing director, the philosopher Giovanni Gentile as the scientific director, the linguist Antonino Pagliaro as the editor-in-chief, Gian Alberto Blanc , Pietro Bonfante , the Marshal of Italy Luigi Cadorna , Finance Minister Alberto De Stefani , the historian Gaetano De Sanctis , the economist Luigi Einaudi , the painter Vittorio Grassi , the doctor Ettore Marchiafava , the lawyer Silvio Longhi , the writer Ferdinando Martini , the journalist Ugo Ojetti , the historian Francesco Salata , the politician Vittorio Scialoja , the economist Angelo Sraffa , the Admiral Paolo Thaon di Revel and Tommaso Tittoni .

The first edition of the Enciclopedia Italiana , consisting of 35 text volumes and an index volume, was published from 1929 to 1937. The publisher is also editor of the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani .

In 1988 the Istituto received the national gold medal for cultural merit ( Medaglia d'oro ai benemeriti della cultura e dell'arte ).
