Giovanni Treccani

Giovanni Treccani degli Alfieri (born January 3, 1877 in Montichiari , province of Brescia , † July 6, 1961 in Milan ) was an Italian entrepreneur, publisher and patron.

Life

The son of a pharmacist and a noblewoman from Brescia went to Germany as a textile worker at the age of 17. Here he also attended the textile school in Krefeld . In 1898 he returned with know-how and joined the Lanificio Rossi textile company . In the emerging Italian textile industry, he rose from a small businessman to a captain of industry. From 1910 he was director of the Cotonificio Valle Ticino company .

In 1919 he donated a large sum to the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei . In 1923 he donated a Renaissance masterpiece to the Italian state, the Bible des Borso d'Este 9, which he had bought for 5 million lire in Paris (today in the Biblioteca Estense in Modena , MS Lat. 422-423).

After the philosopher Giovanni Gentile , who had got to know lexicons and dictionaries during his studies in Germany, suggested an encyclopedia project in 1924 , he founded the Istituto Giovanni Treccani in Milan in 1925 , which had published the Enciclopedia Italiana since 1929 . At the same time, preparatory work began for the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani , the first volume of which appeared in 1960. In 1931, together with other publishers, he founded the Treves-Treccani-Tumminelli company , from which the Istituto dell'Enciclopedia Italiana , based in Rome, emerged in June 1933 .

In 1942 he set up the Fondazione Treccani degli Alfieri for the history of Milan, which published the Storia di Milano in 16 volumes from 1953 to 1966 .

Honors

Treccani has received many awards. In 1924 he became Senator del Regno . In 1932 he became Cavaliere di Gran Croce dell'Ordine della Corona d'Italia and in 1939 Cavaliere dell'Ordine dei Santi Maurizio e Lazzaro , which made him the holder of the two highest orders in Italy. 1937 he was awarded an earl for his patronage of the Italian culture of the titles in 1938 allowed a royal decree him and his descendants the leadership of the name additive degli Alfieri, and in 1939 he gave the University of Milan , the honorary doctorate .
