Montichiari is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 26,144 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Brescia in Lombardy . Since December 1991 the place has city rights based on a presidential decree. Montichiari is on the edge of the Po plain , about 20 kilometers southeast of Brescia . In the south the municipality borders on the province of Mantua . The Chiese flows through the municipality towards the Oglio , a tributary of the Po .

history

Settlements existed in the municipality as early as Roman antiquity. There is no exact date of foundation, but the devastation caused by Alaric I , King of the Visigoths, has been proven in 382 AD. Archaeological finds reveal remains that belong to the time of the subjugation of Lombardy by the Huns under Attila in 447. World War 2 In March / April 1945 the bridge-building battalion 560 was deployed in the area of ​​Montichiari Brescia. The battalion was used against the US Army.
