Castel Mella is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 11,012 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Brescia in Lombardy . The municipality is located about 8 kilometers southwest of Brescia on the Mella .

history

As the name suggests, the place goes back to a fortification that was built as a castrum novum in the Middle Ages. Until 1864 the place name was also Castelnuovo (as Castelnuovo con Colorno e Onzato or Castelnuovo Mella ).

The former Strada Statale 235 di Orzinuovi (since 2001 provincial road) from Crema to Brescia runs through the municipality on the north-western edge .

particularities

The district Fornaci belongs partly to Brescia, Castel Mella and Flero . In the past 20 years (from 1991: 5,800 to 2011: 10,900) the population has almost doubled. The sanctuary of the Madonna del Boschetto in the district of Onzato is worth seeing .
