Limonaia Tignale
At sea level across from the port of Tignale there is a place that was created at the end of the 18th century and was originally intended for the cultivation of citrus fruits . A special feature is the design as a gallery-like structure, which should protect the trees from frost and weather influences in winter. An artificial climate had to be created for lemon trees that ripen all year round.
The side and back walls of the lemon garden formed the rock walls, while the front remained open to the lake. Eight meters high stone pillars were erected on a two meter high protective wall. The top of the pillars and wall were connected across and lengthways with a wooden beam construction. They were used to support the wooden roofs that protected the trees from frost in winter, supplemented by the glass windows inserted between the pillars. The lemon groves were transformed into closed “ greenhouses ” in winter .
The great boom in lemon cultivation began in the 1870s. The harvest yields increased to around six million fruits per year by 1840. However, Sicily was able to bring cheaper products to market as early as 1870. A downward trend set in and slowly but steadily increased despite the better quality of the fruit on Lake Garda. The collapse was brought about by the "black winter" of 1928/29, when almost all the lemon trees on the entire lake froze to death.
Fishing and sports port
Although Tignale is about 550 m above the lake, the community still has a small fishing and sports port on the lake, which is also used as a swimming area by tourists and residents.
