Limone sul Garda is an Italian municipality on the west bank of Lake Garda in the province of Brescia in Lombardy . The municipality on the Gardesana Occidentale has 1142 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). The original fishing village is now a tourist resort with many modern hotels and holiday apartments. The two ports of Porto Vecchio and Porto Nuovo are located in Limone.

The name lime is probably not derived from the surrounding lemon groves, as is often assumed, but from the Latin word limes (border). Because once the Republic of Venice ended in Limone . Nevertheless, the “lemon image” is mainly marketed there.

geography

The place is located directly on the north west bank of Lake Garda and is surrounded by rock faces in the northwest. The municipality of Riva del Garda borders immediately northeast of Limone . In the southwest is the municipality of Tremosine .

history

Limone was originally a small village that belonged between 1426 and 1797 to the Venetian Magnifica Patria, an amalgamation of the western municipalities of Lake Garda and part of the Sabbiatic Valley. With the invasion of Napoleon's troops , this union was dissolved in 1797. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Limone belonged to the Lombard-Venetian Kingdom and thus also to the Austrian Empire .

Austria gave up its rule over Lombardy after the Sardinian War and Limone fell to the Kingdom of Italy, founded in 1861 . The border with Austria was only a few kilometers north of Limone. The close proximity to the border meant that Limone was caught up in the war at an early stage during the First World War. Initially, part of the population fled to the nearby Tremosine. In September 1916, the remaining residents were finally evacuated. Before that, the plantation owners had to hand over all of the covering material for the greenhouses to the military. This led to the fact that the cultivation of citrus fruits was no longer possible.

Between 1928 and 1931 the Gardesana Occidentale was built from Gargnano to Riva. Until then, Limone was only accessible via impassable mule tracks or by ship. The opening of the street led to an economic boom and also to an increase in tourism. The beach promenade was built in 1939 in order to better develop the bank areas within the village.

Economy and Infrastructure

With over 1.2 million overnight stays in 2016, Limone was in first place in Italy in terms of the number of overnight stays in relation to the number of inhabitants. Limone was the only municipality in Italy that had more than 1 million overnight stays per 1,000 inhabitants. In terms of the absolute number of overnight stays, Limone ranked 41st among all Italian municipalities in 2016.

As of December 31, 2015, there were 87 accommodation establishments with 6,841 beds in the municipality.

Around 10,000 tourists come to Limone every day during the season. Large parking spaces have been set up for them on the outskirts, as there is no car traffic in the old town.

The parish church of San Benedetto (St. Benedict) was built in 1691 according to plans by Andrea Pernis on the remains of a previous Romanesque building, probably from the 11th century. The interior of the church is adorned with paintings by Andrea Celesti from the 17th century and a crucifix made of boxwood from the 18th century. There are four marble altars , including three by the sculptor Cristoforo Benedetti from Castione near Brentonico and one in stucco :

  • The baroque main altar made of different colored marble is the work of Cristoforo Benedetti and was built between 1719 and 1724. The altarpiece (1574) shows the Descent from the Cross and comes from the Veronese master Battista Angelo called del Moro .
  • The altar of St. Sacramentes (1699) is by Silvestro and the Ogna brothers from Rezzato . The altarpiece shows the Last Supper (artist unknown).
  • The altar of St. Rosenkranzes (1704) is also by Cristoforo Benedetti. The altarpiece depicts the Madonna and Child, the Mystery of the Holy Rosary, St. Anthony and St. Jacob of Compostela (artist unknown).
