Cristoforo Benedetti (* beginning of 1657 in Castione , Trentino , † 29. April 1740 in Castione) was an Italian sculptor , stonemason and architect of the baroque , predominantly in Tyrol worked.

Life

Cristoforo Benedetti was a student of his father Giacomo Benedetti. He worked with his older brother Sebastiano Benedetti. The brothers were very active artistically and commercially and successfully expanded their father's workshop. They also organized the marble quarrying on Monte Giovo near Castione and owned several quarries there.

Cristoforo Benedetti married Antonia Inzigneri in 1693, with whom he had six children. He handed the workshop over to his son Teodoro Benedetti (1697–1783) while he was still alive. He died in Castione at the age of 83.

Cristoforo was undoubtedly the most important personality of the Benedetti family of artists, although the individual artists in his workshop cannot always be assigned to the works of art. In addition to the family members, Dominikus Moling and the brothers Domenico and Antonio Giuseppe Sartori also worked in his area.

In his art, influences from northern Italy can be demonstrated, but also the introduction of the Roman high baroque altar in Tyrol. Above all, he created numerous altars for churches in the Italian and German-speaking areas of Tyrol, but also chapels, portals, statues, capitals, putti, drapery, urns and coats of arms.

Further works by Benedetti are u. a. in Ala , Pressano , Villa Lagarina , Trient , Dietenheim , Arco , Avio , Brixen , Neustift bei Brixen , Borgo Valsugana , Limone , Verona , Trens and Rovereto .
