Neustift ( Italian Novacella ) is a village in South Tyrol ( Italy ), north of Brixen . The village is a fraction of the municipality of Vahrn and has 826 inhabitants (status: 2011).
location
Neustift is located in the Eisack valley in the north-west of the Brixen valley basin. The place is on the orographic left , eastern side of the Eisack at around 600 m altitude, opposite the main town Vahrn on the other side of the river. Behind Neustift the slopes rise to the Natz-Schabs plateau .
Worth seeing
Neustift is best known for the Neustift monastery built by Augustinian canons in the mid-12th century . You can see a monastery library, the Gothic cloister , the miracle fountain and the basilica. In front of the actual monastery is the St. Michaels Chapel, also called Castel Sant'Angelo because of its shape . Today there is a private school, an educational center and a cellar in the monastery.
