Castel Sant'Angelo (Neustift)
The Castel Sant'Angelo in Neustift in South Tyrol is a former chapel in the immediate vicinity of Neustift Monastery . The sacred building , consecrated to the Archangel Michael and therefore also called Michael’s Chapel, was probably built in the 12th century. The model was probably the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome.
The Romanesque central building , the largest medieval building of its kind in Tyrol , is shaped as a hexagon . The ground floor has a massive ribbed vault; The actual chapel is located in a round room on the upper floor, which can be walked around in a covered corridor. There is a dome above it . The stair tower and the battlements date from between 1493 and 1502.
The chapel directly in front of the actual monastery complex probably served as a place of worship for pilgrims passing by . Today it is used as an exhibition space.
