Kim Kwan-jin (born August 27, 1949 in Jeonju , Jeonbuk ) is a retired South Korean politician and general . From November 26, 2010 to June 30, 2014, he was the Minister of Defense of South Korea.

Career

Kim Kwan-jin graduated from the Military Academy in 1971 and served in various command functions from 1999 to 2005. In 2005 he was promoted to four-star general. Before taking office, he was the 33rd Chairman of the General Staff of the South Korean Armed Forces . In 2006, Kim Kwan-jin replaced his predecessor Lee Sang-hee in this role, before he was replaced in 2008 by Kim Tae-young . After the bombing of Yeonpyeong , Kim Tae-young, now Minister of Defense, resigned from his political office, which was taken over by Kim Kwan-jin. Even after Park Geun-hye took over the presidency, Kim Kwan-jin remained in office, partly due to the ongoing tense situation with North Korea. In June 2014, he was replaced by Han Min-goo in the ministerial office and became director of the national security bureau.
