Kim Tae-young (born January 13, 1949 ) is a general in the South Korean armed forces and was its 34th Chairman of the General Staff and 42nd Minister of Defense of South Korea .

In 1972 he graduated from a Korean military academy. In 1997/98 he was the commander of an artillery brigade, and in 1999/2000 he led the 35th Infantry Division. In the following years he was promoted and took on various management tasks. In 2008/9 he was Chief of Staff. In September 2009 he became Minister of Defense.

In connection with the sinking of the corvette Cheonan , criticism of him was loud, so that in May 2010 he offered President Lee Myung-bak his resignation, which the latter refused. In November 2010, he resigned as Minister of Defense following renewed criticism after the bombing of Yeonpyeong .
