The bombardment of Yeonpyeong was a military incident on 23 November 2010. It occurred on the the 1953 armistice South Korea awarded island of Yeonpyeong in the Yellow Sea , on which one of about a thousand soldiers occupied military base of the South Korean army is.

prehistory

North and South Korea have been formally at war with each other since the beginning of the Korean War in 1950, as only a ceasefire and no peace treaty was signed in 1953 .

Yeonpyeong Island is much closer to mainland North Korea than South Korea. The Northern Limit Line was determined unilaterally, North Korea does not recognize it. The line runs at a distance of about 10-30 km from the North Korean mainland (Hwanghae-namdo province). North Korea claims the surrounding waters and sees the use of the island by South Korea and the country's regular maneuvers with the US in the region as a provocation.

According to its own statements, South Korea fired dozens of projectiles for test purposes in the west, but not in the north, as part of combat exercises. The South Korean government news agency Yonhap According to North Korea sent regarding the maneuver at 08:20 by telex calling on South Korea to stop the shelling. However, the exercise continued. According to the South Korean representation, the artillery of the North Korean People's Army first shot at the island at 14:43 local time.

According to North Korean accounts, however, artillery attacks by the South Korean forces over North Korean waters near Yeonpyeong Island took place for the first time on November 23, 2010 at around 1 p.m. local time, to which North Korea responded immediately with an attack on the island. According to the official North Korean account, the attack was a reaction to "South Korean shots in the direction of North Korean territorial waters".

The South Korean military then returned fire in the direction of North Korea, from where the attack took place. Three of the six stationed on the island fired howitzers of type K9 Thunder about 80 artillery shells. Two vehicles were not operational because of the previous fire and one had a jam. The fighting lasted about an hour. At least 50 houses caught fire from North Korean shelling. One North Korean soldier was killed and one injured. Two South Korean soldiers and two civilians were killed in the attacks and 16 soldiers and three civilians were injured.

South Korea mobilized its troops and announced a reinforcement of the military on the island with additional artillery, long-range missiles and tanks. Talks with the Korean Red Cross regarding family reunions for North and South Koreans and visits to the Kaesŏng industrial region have been suspended by South Korea. The United States also sent the aircraft carrier USS George Washington to South Korea. This was to be used from November 28 to December 1, 2010 in a joint military exercise by the USA and South Korea. Joint maneuvers have already taken place in the past few years in which the case of war with North Korea was practiced.

In addition, several states tried to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict. The People's Republic of China, which is in close contact with the North Korean government and could take on a mediating role, would play a special role.

In South Korea, however, there were increasing voices calling for retaliation for the attack. About 110 people demonstrated in front of the South Korean Ministry of Defense on November 24, 2010 and set North Korean flags and portraits of North Korea's head of state Kim Jong Il and his son and designated successor Kim Jong Un on fire. Several MPs called for an air strike on North Korean artillery positions. After further criticism of his cautious reaction to the bombing of Yeonpyeong, the South Korean Defense Minister Kim Tae-young announced his resignation on November 25, 2010. Kim Kwan-jin succeeded him on November 26, 2010 .

As a further consequence of the conflict, all three major US stock market indices were negatively impacted on November 24, 2010 and after a downward slide closed with more than one percent in the red.

In December 2010, the International Criminal Court stated that it was investigating action against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in relation to the bombing, as well as the sinking of the South Korean corvette Cheonan in spring 2010 .
