On May 24, 2008, a fire broke out in one of the porter's ventilation shafts and quickly spread through cable ducts over several decks and a total of 80 chambers; 37 seafarers were injured in the process. The carrier, who was fueling the frigate USS Crommelin (FFG-37) at the time , was en route to Japan in the Pacific Ocean, near the Galápagos Islands . After the fire had been extinguished, the carrier drove to the naval base in San Diego (California) under its own power for repair work . According to media reports, Commanding Officer Captain David C. Dykhoff and his Executive Officer Captain David Dober were released from command of the porter in July 2008 because of the accident. The cause of the fire was the violation of safety rules, as a cigarette was smoked in a technical room. The damage amounted to 70 million US dollars.
