Song Young-moo (born February 24, 1949 in Nonsan , Chungcheongnam-do ) is a South Korean politician and retired admiral . He was South Korea's Minister of Defense from July 13, 2017 to September 21, 2018 .

Career

Song Young-moo attended the Naval Academy from 1969 to 1973 after finishing school. In the Navy he served up over the years. In 1984 he earned an MBA from Kyungnam University parallel to his military career .

In 2000 he was promoted to commander of the 1st Fleet, and in 2002 he moved to headquarters. In 2003 he was Deputy Naval Chief of Staff, and in 2006 he was appointed Chief Naval Staff. He held this command until he left military service in 2008. Most recently he held the rank of admiral.

Song taught at a military and police school from 2013 and held various advisory activities on military matters. On July 13, 2017, he took over the ministerial office in the Ministry of Defense from his predecessor Han Min-goo and remained in office until September 21, 2018. He was followed by Jeong Kyeong-doo .

He is married and has two daughters.
