About this picture

Chungcheongnam-do ( South Chungcheong ) is a province in western South Korea . It is located on the Yellow Sea and borders Gyeonggi-do in the north, Chungcheongbuk-do in the east and Jeollabuk-do in the south .

The city of Daejeon in the east was the seat of the provincial administration until 2012, but has been a separate political unit since 1989. Hongseong is the new provincial capital . Until 1895, Chungcheongbuk-do and -nam-do were united in Chungcheong Province .

The coast is about 3,200 kilometers long, including about 250 scattered islands. The most important city in the province besides Daejeon is Cheonan . Other cities are Asan , Boryeong , Gongju , Nonsan , Seosan and Gyeryong .

About a third of the area of Chungcheongnam-do is cultivated. In addition to agriculture, fishing is also of great importance. About 220 km² of beach are exposed and are used for the natural production of salt through evaporation. Coal is mined, but gold and silver mines can also be found in Chungcheongnam-do.

At 845 meters, Gyeryong-san , located in the national park of the same name, is the only notable elevation. The mountain is known for its special stone formations. There are also some old temples in this national park. In 1978 , the Taeanhaean National Park was opened on the Taean Peninsula , and there are some popular bathing beaches.

Sejong City

President Roh Moo-hyun wanted to move the seat of government from Seoul to the planned city of Sejong City , which is being built in Chungcheongnam-do. After his plans to completely relocate the capital had failed before the Constitutional Court, he planned to relocate only a few ministries and government organizations.
