Gyeryong ( 보령시 ) is a city in the interior of the South Korean province of Chungcheongnam-do with an area of ​​60.7 km² and a population of 43,188 inhabitants in 2019. The city was founded in 2003 after a prolonged local agitation and separation from the city of Nonsan is one of the youngest cities in South Korea. The city is tailored to the needs of the South Korean armed forces and is home to the headquarters of the country's army, air force and navy. Almost half of the population are members of the military or their families.

The area now called Gyeryong was known as Shindoan among the elderly. Gyeryong is also considered a satellite city of Daejeon due to its geographical proximity . The mountain Gyeryong-san (Korean: 계룡산) adjacent to the city is considered to be the mountain with the most Qi (spiritual energy) in Korea. It also forms the heart of Gyeryongsan National Park .

history

Gyeryong City and its environs were known as the Yeonsan Gun until 1896. After the Japanese colonization, it was incorporated into Nonsan. Gyeryong was later chosen as the location for the military. In 1989, Gyeryongdae Military and Army Headquarters moved to Gyeryong. In 1991 it was designated as a special area by the President. The Congress of South Korea approved a special bill that established Gyeryong City on June 30, 2003.

Infrastructure

The city is connected to the rest of the country via a train station and several national roads.
