About this picture

Gyeongsangbuk-do (North Gyeongsang) is a province in eastern South Korea . It borders on Gangwon-do in the north and the Sea of Japan in the east . In the south the province is bounded by Gyeongsangnam-do , in the west by Jeollabuk-do and Chungcheongnam-do . In the south lies the megacity of Daegu , which has been under separate administration since 1981.

geography

In summer, Gyeongsangbuk-do is the hottest province in South Korea because it is largely surrounded by the Taebaek Mountains (in the east) and Sobaek (in the north and west). To the south, the country opens up to the other part of the former Gyeongsang-do province . Another important feature of the landscape is the Naktonggang River , which divides the province in a north-south direction. Ulleungdo Island is also part of Gyeongsangbuk-do.

history

The province was the home of the Silla Kingdom and is shaped by its cultural traditions. Many artists, political leaders and scholars come from this province.

economy

The main agricultural products of the province are rice , beans , potatoes and barley ; well-known specialties are apples from Daegu . Dairy farming is practiced in some parts of the province, but marine products such as seaweed and squid are also of great importance.

The steel processing, electronics and textile industries are of economic importance. However, the majority of employees now work in the service sector. The port of Pohang is the starting point for important sea routes to Japan, Russia and North Korea.
