Pohang is a large city in South Korea with 516,105 inhabitants. It is located on the coast of the Sea of Japan in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province in the east of the country. The city has a port and is connected to the capital Seoul by road and rail network. It's about three hours by train from Seoul. The nearest international seaport is Busan . One of the world's leading steel producers , the Pohang Iron and Steel Company ( POSCO ), is based in the city. The city is also home to the Pohang Steelers K-League football club .
geography
The city is divided by the Hyeongsan River and lies at its mouth. To the west of the river, the residential and commercial development consists mainly of smaller buildings. These districts are criss-crossed by a dense road network. To the east of the river, the industrial development that arose in connection with the construction of the steel mill after 1972 dominates. This part of the city consists of large factories and warehouses. The natural boundaries of the city to the east, west and south are forested hills and mountains.
economy
Although smaller fishing settlements had existed in the area around Pohang around 1500 BC, urbanization did not begin until 1930 when the port facilities were built. POSCO started building a large steel mill in 1972. The steel industry is still one of the most important economic sectors in the city today. Efforts to reduce reliance on heavy industry have sparked interest in environmental protection and in Pohang's culture.
education
The world-renowned Pohang University of Technology and Sciences is located in Pohang .
