Ulleung County ( kor .: 울릉군 , Ulleung-gun ) is located in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province in South Korea . The administrative headquarters are in the city of Ulleung-eup. The district had an area of 72.9 km² and a population of 9,785 inhabitants in 2019.
The county consists mainly of Ulleungdo Island but includes a total of 44 islands including the Liancourt Rocks (Dokdo), which is effectively ruled by South Korea but claimed by Japan and North Korea . All of these islands are in the Sea of Japan .
The area was a separate kingdom under the name Usan-guk until 512 , until it was conquered by Silla , after which it remained a largely autonomous vassal state. After the fall of Silla, Goryeo annexed the area.
