Gumi is a city in the South Korean province of Gyeongsangbuk-do . It is the hometown of South Korean President Park Chung-hee, who was assassinated in 1979 . During his reign, the city's industry was heavily promoted by the state. Nowadays, Gumi is also referred to as South Korea's Silicon Valley , as mainly companies such as LG and Samsung have settled here. Mainly liquid crystal screens for the consumer sector are produced here .

In 2013, it was the first city in the world to set up an electric bus network in which the OLEV buses are charged with electricity wirelessly using induction technology (100 kilowatts at a frequency of 20 kilohertz and a maximum transmission efficiency of 85 percent). The technology was developed in Daejeon at KAIST .

Hydrofluoric acid accident

On September 27, 2012, while loading hydrofluoric acid from a tanker, an accident occurred in the operations of Hube Global Co., Ltd. in Gumi. An explosion occurred and around 8 tons of hydrofluoric acid were released. Four Hube Global employees and one foreign worker were killed, at least 18 seriously injured and around 3,200 people were treated in hospitals. More than 12,200 people were affected, including fire brigade and police forces. The material damage includes the crop failure of 210 hectares of grain and 3,940 animals. Hundreds of residents had to be evacuated than two months and had 40 businesses near a profit loss of 5.3 billion Korean Won . The South Korean government put its restoration costs in the disaster area at 55.4 billion South Korean won . On January 27, 2013 and May 2, 2013, further incidents involving hydrofluoric acid occurred at the Samsung semiconductor production facility in Hwaseong .
