Sangju ( saŋ.dʑu ) is a city in North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea . Although Sangju is more rural today, it was once a major city in Korea .

history

The name Sangju for the city is first given in the time of the Silla Empire . In the Samguk Sagi and Samguk Yusa - historical records of the Three Kingdoms of Korea - a land called Sabeolguk is described on the site of today's Sangju. Lying between Silla and Baekje , the land was conquered by Silla around 249 . In the united Silla, the Sangju fortress was one of the 9 ju , an administrative division of the empire.

education

There is a Kyungpook National University campus in the city . Until 2008 this was the Sangju National University.
