  • Autumn: The armies of Emperor Philip Arabs and Decius meet near Verona . The imperial troops are defeated in a bloody battle. Philip Arabs is killed. His twelve-year-old son Philip Caesar , who has been co-regent for two years, is celebrated as sole ruler in Rome. Shortly afterwards he is killed by the Praetorians . The 59-year-old Decius becomes Emperor of the Roman Empire.
  • The brother of Philip Arabs, Priscus , names himself anti-emperor in Antioch in the Roman province of Syria (Syria).
  • The body of the opposing emperor Iotapianus , who was murdered by his own troops, is brought to Decius in Rome .
