Politics and world events

Roman Empire

  • The Roman emperor Decius gives the office of censor to Valerian . The censor has, among other things, the task of classifying the citizens of the Roman Empire into various electoral classes and tribes . In addition, Decius appoints his older son Herennius Etruscus as Augustus and thus as his co-regent.

  • Spring: Goths , Gepids and Carps cross the Danube in large numbers for the first time and plunder Roman cities in the Roman province of Dacia ( Dacia ), then also in Moesia ( Moesia ), Thracia (Thrace) and Illyricum ( Illyria ). The so-called "Gotensturm" begins. When the Carps besieged the city of Nicopolis , they are surprised and driven out by the Roman army under Decius and Herennius Etruscus. The largely undefended province of Moesia Inferior (Lower Moesia ) becomes the target of the Gothic warriors under King Kniva . The Romans cannot prevent Philippopolis from falling into the hands of the Goths.
  • Priscus , the brother of the emperor Philip Arabs overthrown by Decius , to whom the eastern provinces are subordinate, allies himself with the Goths and proclaims himself counter-emperor in Naissus .
  • June: The Goths, weakened by the siege of Philippopolis, offer Decius to give him all their booty and prisoners for safe passage out of the empire. In view of his strengthened military situation, Decius refuses to negotiate with the Goths. Kniva's troops leave Philippopolis and try to reach the Roman borders.
Outside of Philippopolis, Romans and Goths meet. Emperor Herennius Etruscus is fatally hit by an arrow. The Goths can escape with their prey.
  • June: Instead of regrouping, Herennius' father, Emperor Decius, pursues the Goths and tries to cut off their way to the Roman border. At Abrittus (today Razgrad, Bulgaria ) there is another fight. In the Battle of Abrittus , King Kniva succeeds in pushing the Romans into the marshland. He divides his 70,000 warriors into several smaller groups and can thus surround the Roman legion. The battle turns into a major defeat for the Romans: Decius is also killed by the Goths. He and his son Herennius Etruscus are the first Roman emperors to die fighting a foreign army.
  • When the death of the Kaiser becomes known, Decius' 16-year-old son Hostilian becomes Kaiser. In Moesia, however, after Decius' death the troops raise their general, the governor of Moesia superior (Upper Moesia ), Trebonianus Gallus, to the position of anti-emperor. To avoid further fighting, Hostilian is adopted by Gallus. Nominally, both are equal as emperors; in fact, Hostilian still has little influence on events in the empire due to his young age.
  • Trebonianus Gallus negotiates a peace treaty with Kniva in Moesien: The Goths are allowed to return to their homeland with their booty. They vow to respect the borders of the Roman Empire and receive annual tribute payments in return. The treaty is considered to be one of the worst defeats for the Romans.
  • November: Emperor Hostilian falls ill in Viminatium from the Cyprian plague, which has raged in the empire since the previous year, and dies within a short time. His body is cremated on site and buried in its own mausoleum. Hostilian is the first Roman emperor in 40 years to die of natural causes.
The remains of the city of Viminatium and the mausoleum, now on Serbian territory, are currently being explored.
  • In Rome, Emperor Trebonianus Gallus appoints his son Volusianus as co-ruler.

  • March: During an interruption in the persecution of Christians , Cornelius is elected Bishop of Rome . He wants to take back the Christians ( lapsi ) who left the community during the persecution . Novatian is outraged that it is not the Church but only God that has the power to forgive.
  • May: The Synod of Carthage deals with the subject of the Lapsi .
  • July: The Roman Senate decides that Herennius Etruscus and Decius are accepted into the heaven of the gods.
  • Autumn: Novatian is excommunicated at a church synod in Rome. He then founds the ecclesiastical community of the Novatians.

Disasters

  • The Cyprian plague continues to claim thousands of lives in the Roman Empire.
