Priscus (counter-emperor)
Lucius (?) Priscus († 250 / 251 ) was a Roman governor and anti-emperor.
Priscus was probably governor ( praeses ) of the province of Thracia . In 250/251 he defended Philippopolis against the Goths under Kniva , but could not hold the city despite brave resistance . After taking the city (second half of the year 250 or spring 251), the Goths raised Priscus to the position of anti-emperor in order to be able to better fight Emperor Decius . Declared an enemy of the state ( hostis ) by the Senate , Priscus was soon slain. Priscus fell into the damnatio memoriae .
It is very likely that Priscus can be identified with Titus Iulius Priscus, the governor of Thracia 249/50.
Priscus is not the same as the Praetorian prefect Gaius Iulius Priscus under Emperor Philip Arabs .
