The invasions of the years 253 to 256

It is not clear whether King Kniva asks for more money or whether governor Aemilianus , who comes from the African island of Djerba , intentionally withholds the disgraceful tribute for Rome. Gothic warriors cross the Danube. They are defeated by the Roman legion, led by Aemilianus. This is then proclaimed by his troops to be the counter-emperor and marches towards Rome.
  • July: The emperors Trebonianus Gallus and Volusianus gather their troops in Italia. Also Valerian , the governor of Raetia and Noricum is called for help. At Interamna , the armies meet before Valerian can intervene with his legions. The battle becomes a defeat for the imperial troops. Trebonianus Gallus and his son Volusianus move north with a group of survivors. At the Forum Flaminii, the emperors are killed by their own soldiers. Aemilianus becomes Roman emperor. At the same time, Valerian has his troops in northern Italy proclaim himself the counter-emperor.

In Rome, the former Senator Valerian is quickly recognized as the rightful ruler in place of Silbannacus, who ruled Rome for a short time .
