Antoninian of the Numerian
- March: Imperial crisis of the 3rd century in the Roman Empire : Emperor Numerian suffers an inflammation of the eyes in Emesa and begins to lead his army back to Rome .
- The Bagauden , a group of Gallic peasants, rise up against Roman rule.
- November: Numerian is found dead in his litter near Chalcedon . The circumstances surrounding his death are controversial. The Praetorian prefect Lucius Flavius (?) Aper is accused of murder and executed.
- November 20 : Diocletian is appointed anti-emperor by the eastern army - against Numerian's brother Carinus , who continues to rule the west of the empire. Carinus leaves Rome to face Diocletian.
- Marcus Aurelius Sabinus Iulianus takes advantage of the emperor's absence and declares himself to be the opposing emperor in Siscia in Pannonia . There is an important mint in the city.
- Since the Praetorians , the emperor's bodyguards, submit to the Roman Senate , Diocletian founds the Jovians and the Herculians , who will take over the protection of the (eastern) Roman emperors for 700 years.
