Roman Empire

  • The Roman emperor Carinus defeats the usurper Julian of Pannonia , who had proclaimed himself counter-emperor the previous year.
  • July: Diocletian's and Carinus' armies clash in the Battle of Margus. The outcome of the fight has been narrated differently. What is clear is that Carinus is no longer alive the following day. Diocletian can assert himself as the ruler of the Roman Empire. This is the end of the era of the soldier emperors.
  • Diocletian begins a major reform of the Roman Empire, which was greatly weakened after the imperial crisis of the 3rd century . Among other things, he divides the empire into twelve dioceses with 85 provinces.
  • First mention of the Saxons who raid the coasts of Belgium and Gaul by sea .
