Roman Empire
March 1 : Emperor Diocletian appoints his friend Maximian as Augustus in Rome , formally equal co-emperor, who is to lead the business of government in the western half of the empire.
Carausius , commander of the Roman fleet in Britain , is sentenced to death for piracy by Maximian. Carausius then declared himself emperor and brought Britain and Northern Gaul under his control.
