Roman Empire
- Imperial crisis of the 3rd century : The Roman emperor Tacitus dies surprisingly after his successful campaign against the Goths . Eutropius and Aurelius Victor report that he died of a febrile illness. Zosimos , however, assumes that Tacitus was murdered.
- Florianus , the brother of Tacitus, who is currently leading a campaign against the invading Franks , is appointed emperor by the western troops. However, it does not have the support of the Senate.
- September. During a campaign against the Heruli , who have been making the east of the Roman Empire unsafe for years, Emperor Florianus learns that the eastern army has elevated Probus to the position of anti-emperor. Both armies meet in Cilicia . Despite being numerically inferior, Probus can decisively weaken the imperial troops through strategic skill. When Probus' dominance on the battlefield becomes apparent, Florianus is murdered by his own troops.

- In the capital of the Sassanid Empire , Seleukia-Ctesiphon , Bahram II succeeds his father Bahram I on the throne of the Shah.
- (or 277 ): Mani , founder of the religion Manichaeism , is executed in the prison of Gundischapur . His religion, which combines elements of Christianity , Buddhism and Zoroastrianism , brought him into conflict with followers of all three religions. After his death, the persecution of the Manicheans begins.
