Mint of Bahram I.

Bahram I. ( Persian بهرام Bahrām [ bæɦˈrɔːm ]; † 276 ) was Persian great king from 273 to 276 .

Bahram was a son of the great king Shapur I , who entrusted him with the administration of the province of Gelan. After the death of his brother Hormizd I , Bahram took control of the Sassanid Empire in 273, but the chronology of his reign is controversial. His brother Narseh , who had actually been planned by Shapur I to succeed Hormizd, was left behind. Bahram confirmed the honors that his brother Hormizd bestowed on the mobad (priest) Katir , the renewer of Zoroastrianism . The followers of other religions - Christians , Buddhists or the supporters of the religious founder Mani - he had persecuted at times. Mani was captured during the reign of Bahram I and died in prison. In the Manichaean sources, Bahram is also described as a staunch opponent of Mani and his teaching.

Nothing is known from the sources for this time about foreign policy events, such as conflicts with Rome or with the tribes on the northeast border.

Remarks

  1. For details see the article Weber, Wahram I. (PDF; 1.4 MB) in the Prosopography of the Sasanid Empire , p. 26 with note 69.
  2. See Weber, Prosopographie des Sasanidenreichs , p. 39 ff. Often, however, Mani's death year is assumed to be 277, cf. on this see the article Manichaeism in the Theologische Realenzyklopädie , Vol. 22, 1992, p. 30.
  3. The note in the Late Antique Historia Augusta , according to which Emperor Aurelian had prepared a campaign against the Persians, is, like many other statements in this work, to be regarded as fiction; see. Weber, Prosopographie des Sasanidenreichs , p. 31.
