Events
Politics and world events
Roman Empire
- February / March: Emperor Aurelian , who defended his rule over the Roman Empire against the Teutons and various usurpers, turns to the Imperium Galliarum under Tetricus I , which separated from Rome during the crisis in 260 . The Gallic troops are defeated in a battle near Catalauni .
- The Teutons exploited the weakness of the Romans in the west of their empire and crossed the Rhine . Among other things, the Legio I Minervia in their Bonna camp is attacked. The Rhine border can only be restored 20 years later. From now on, Franks settled in what is now the Netherlands, Belgium and the Rhineland. The governor of the province of Belgica , Faustinus , rises against Tetricus I. He can no longer intervene.
- In view of the catastrophic military situation, Tetricus I changes sides and joins Aurelian. He had promised to spare the life of his opponent and his son Tetricus II . Aurelian succeeds in suppressing the Faustine uprising. After that, the western provinces are again under the control of Rome.
- Emperor Aurelian celebrates the successes of his rule in a triumphal procession in Rome : He successfully defended the borders against the Teutons and recaptured the breakaway provinces in the east and west. The rulers of the two sub-kingdoms Tetricus I and Zenobia of Palmyra are brought before the crowd, but their lives are spared. Since the crisis 14 years earlier, when the Roman Empire finally threatened to collapse, the emperor in Rome has regained control of the entire territory for the first time.
- The legionary camp Rigomagus (Remagen) is expanded into a fortress in order to be able to better defend the province against the advancing Teutons.
Empire of China
- Empire of China / Era of the Three Kingdoms : Empress Yang Yan dies in Luoyang . She previously made Emperor Jin Wudi promise to marry her cousin Yang Zhi after her death. She feared that another empress would want to challenge her mentally retarded son Jin Huidi for the title of Crown Prince.
economy
- After his return to Rome, Emperor Aurelian carried out a coin reform. The ace and the sesterce are completely devalued by inflation. The most common traffic coin is the double denarius introduced in 214 (known today as the Antoninian ). Aurelian refined the minting of this coin and increased its silver content. The new coin is also known as Aurelianus . The minting of smaller coin units is gradually being discontinued.
religion
- December 25 : Emperor Aurelian dedicates a Temple of Sol in Rome . Three days after the solstice , the Romans celebrate the festival of the "undefeated sun god". The sun cult and the similar Mithraism are widespread in the Roman Empire.
- December 30th : Felix I , the Bishop of Rome , dies. He is listed as a martyr - possibly without justification . Felix I is buried in the Calixtus catacomb . His successor will be determined in January 275 .
