Faustinus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Faustinus was a Roman counter-emperor in the 3rd century AD, probably in 274.

Faustinus was a usurper against Tetricus I , the last emperor of the so-called Gallic Empire ( Imperium Galliarum ). He is only known from a few short notes in written sources, from which it emerges that a certain Faustinus instigated a mutiny among the troops of Tetricus. Neither his full name nor his previous career are recorded. According to Polemius Silvius , his usurpation started in Augusta Treverorum (Trier), the provincial capital of Gallia Belgica . Since Aurelius Victor reports that Faustinus was provincial governor under Tetricus I, he could have been at the head of this province at the time of his usurpation .

The exact time of the usurpation of Faustinus is controversial, most likely the spring or early summer of the year 274. His rebellion will probably have ended with the defeat of Tetricus against Aurelian in the Battle of Châlons at the latest . No information has been passed on about the specific actions of Faustinus during his usurpation or about his further fate.
