  • Imperial crisis of the 3rd century : Summer: Encouraged by his victories in the north, Aurelian turns to the renegade provinces in the south, where Zenobia is the de facto ruler over Egypt, Syria and Asia. The attack forces Zenobia to finally proclaim her son Vaballathus as the anti-emperor. Zenobia's army is defeated at Antioch on the Orontes . The usurpers have to flee to Emesa .
  • August: Emperor Aurelian, who followed Zenobia to Emesa, can defeat her troops again. Zenobia and Vaballathus are captured by Roman soldiers on their flight to Persia. Palmyra is besieged and finally conquered. The southeastern provinces are once again under direct control of Rome.
