Titus (Byzantium)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Titus ( Greek : Titos, also: Taratos) († 272 ) was Bishop of Byzantion as successor to Eugenius I.

The name form Taratos appears only in Matthäus Kigalas, who entered him in the list of patriarchs as Τάρατος ὁ καὶ Τίτος (Taratos, also known as Titos), which was later changed by Philippos the Cypriot to Τάρατος, ὁ Κιτήτης (Taratos the Kiteter). The most common form of name, however, is Titus or Titos, which appears in the traditional lists of patriarchs.

The beginning of his term of office is dated to the year 242. While a number of bishops fell victim to the persecution of Christians by Decius , Titus not only survived this, but also that of the emperors Trebonianus Gallus and Valerian . His term of office was apparently 30 years, even if he is occasionally assigned 35 years and 6 months. His successor was Dometius .
