Roman Empire
- Imperial crisis of the 3rd century : Spring: Emperor Gallienus succeeds in confronting the Goths on their way to Macedonia on Nestos and inflicting a severe defeat on them. But then he receives the news that his cavalry commander Aureolus has risen against him in Mediolanum and he has to return to Italia.
- Aureolus is besieged in Mediolanum by Emperor Gallienus and his allies. Lured away from his troops by Aurelian and Claudius , the emperor is murdered by them. Aureolus in Milan quickly proclaims himself emperor, but loses his life in a storm by the Praetorians . Claudius becomes emperor Claudius II. Sole ruler of the Roman Empire , Aurelian general of the Roman cavalry.
- November: Emperor Claudius Gothicus defeats the Alamanni in the battle at Lacus Benacus ( Lake Garda ). Roman historians note that the emperor and his 35,000 soldiers routed or killed 100,000 Alemanni. For this he received the honorary title Germanicus Maximus .
