Domnus I.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Domnus I († 273 ) was Bishop of Antioch as the successor to the deposed Paul of Samosata .

Eusebius of Caesarea reports in his historia ecclesiastica that Domnus was the son of the former Antiochene bishop Demetrianus . Paul of Samosata had been deposed by the other Eastern bishops in 268 because of his controversial Christological stance; he was accused of denying the divine nature of Christ. Eusebius also mentions the alleged arrogance of Paul, who originally lived in poor conditions but now boasts worldly riches and titles. He contrasts this with the exemplary character of the Domnus. However, since Paul in Antioch was supported by the community and the ruler of the Palmyrenian Empire, Zenobia , Domnus could not actually take over his office until 272. The following year he died; he was succeeded by Timaeus .
